The New Republic has shoved its big fat foot in its mouth by publishing exaggerated, invented and uncorroborated stories from a soldier who had been stationed in Iraq. Scott Thomas Beauchamp, a private in the U.S. Army, has been discredited for fabricating stories about soldiers mocking a woman disfigured by an injury, getting their kicks by running over dogs with Bradley Fighting Vehicles and playing with Iraqi children’s skulls taken from a mass grave. The Drudge Report has obtained copies The New Republic’s internal investigation into Beauchamp’s stories. To put it mildly… it is screwup of monumental proportions. Now Beauchamp acknowledges that his stories were contrived. And the “fact finder” that TNR used was Beauchamp’s wife! Life is indeed a circle.
I searched for those stories on TNR (http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=20070723&s=diarist072307) and not to my dismay I was greeted with the 404 file not found error. Hmmmm… I wonder why?
Let’s see if they print a retraction and apology.
